Normally I ignore non Dead posts, and I am loathe to get embroiled in political issues. However, since this is really a scientific issue wrapped as a political one, I will make this one exception.

I think this report illustrates that (as has been reported by various news organizations) the recent report on global warming was watered down and the statistics were skewed towards "best case scenarios" as a result of political pressure from those who continue to insist (despite overwhelming evidence and overwhelming agreement in scientific circles) that global warming is either a myth or is a phenomenon that is not caused by human actions. These people with their heads in the sand include, but are not limited to, powerful interests in the carbon based energy industry who have the ear of the top people in the current administration, and of course members of the administration and various media members who have their own short sighted agendas.

Unfortunately this is a problem which will get exponentially worse the more we put off positive action. Just like the soaring deficits, most of us will not live to see the most dire consequences of our current path. It is our children and grandchildren who will pay the price and inherit the planetary social, political and health problems that our shortsightedness likely will bring.

This issue is a perfect example of why politics and science so often do not mix. For those interested, I would highly recommend the documentary "Who Killed The Electric Car". It tells a chilling tale of how Corporations and Government can conspire to stop positivelong term action for short term gains

"If sufficiently large amounts of fresh water are supplied to the North Atlantic, such as from melting ice-sheets or major increases in precipitation, the deep-water formation, and hence the transport of warm surface water from the south, may cease or at least decrease substantially."

ya, that might buy northern Europe and northeast Canada a couple of extra years...the Swedish study makes no mention of the people in the south who will be losing years due to stagnant ocean currents

buy real estate in “Greenland”

agree

and for the fools that complain about the "costs", even if you don't value your own life or the lives of your offspring, do you not realize that unchecked global warming carries a far greater economic price tag?

Midnight,

You are absolutely right about the ultimate costs of our inaction. Another point is that there is tons of money to be made transforming our society from a carbon spewing culture to a "green" culture, and after all that is what capitalism is all about.

In a related note, my son, Dylan, is graduating from HS this month. He is getting a free ride from CU Boulder, and of course his mother and I could not be any prouder. His goal is to graduate with a degree in Chemical Engineering and a masters in environmental engineering. Two of the most brilliant people I know, his Grandfather (my Dad), a chem Engineer, and his uncle (my older brother), an enviro engineer, both told him that the field of Environmental Management/Engineering is going to be one of the most important, and lucrative fields of the next century as mankind begins to address this issue and clean up the mess it has made.

Even my father (who retired 15 yrs ago as a senior VP of the worlds 4th largest oil company) recognizes the importance of this issue and believes that our generation will be judged on how we react to and handle global warming. This will be our legacy for good or bad!!

The stupid oil companies should have jumped on this and started the conversion years ago. But that would have eliminated the need to have boots on the ground in the middle east... Oil prices are our jizya fees.

Wasn't the jizyah tax lower than the Roman Empire tax?

Now, who benefits from taxes and is exempt from paying these days? Unfortunately for most of us, there is no free market but instead an artificial system of price supports and payoffs. If markets are to work, goods must reflect actual prices as much as possible.

Yours truly,

Make the white stripes on the road wider.
Stop dying grey hair.
Leave your old CD's face up in your backyard.
Paint your roof white or place mirrors on it.
Wear mirrored shades with white frames and keep looking up.
Plant ice cube trees.
Nuke Iran and hope nuclear winter offsets the warming.
Buy carbon credits from Al Gore.
Let Sheryl Crow wipe your ass with her sleeve.
Paint Iraq silver.
Stop toupee use.
Move to higher ground.
Bring back all extinct species with white fur.
Increase the rate of bleaching of coral reefs to make more white stuff.
Cut wider lines of blow, meth, etc.
Use eggs, toilet paper and shaving cream on days other than mischief night.
Listen to the white album more.
Force albino's to spend more time outside.
Make more Irish people.
Eliminate printed newspaper, unless you are going to wrap all the dark trees in it.
Stop popping whiteheads.
Plant white flowers (morning glories, poppies, etc)
Leave used diapers (face down) arrayed neatly on your front lawn for those with carbon hungry offspring.
Paint Al Gore's private jet with silver metallic paint.
Replace cluster bombs with ping pong balls.
Make lots of puffy white clouds of smoke.
Stick to lighter colored blotter paper.
Dress like you are in the Bee Gees.
Smile more.
Keep your eyes open.
Keep the palms of your hands and the soles of your feet pointed skyward.
Replace all spheres with disco balls.
Run your AC with the windows open.
Cover Tehren in fluffy white ash.
Hurl missiles towards the sun in an attempt to destroy it.
Have superman fly around the earth backwards so fast that time rolls back to the industrial revolution, and then have him kill everyone.
Tell lots of white lies.
Prey an asteroid wipes us out and the cockroaches do a better job next time.
Surrender to Jihadist and waive millions of white flags.
Spray cans of wart remover on glaciers to freeze them.
Make white hats mandatory.
Read the white pages outside.
Cover the ground with paper punch circles.
Use nukes to push our orbit farther from the sun.
Clutter space with reflective space junk to block out those damn light waves.
Start packing for Gliese 581.
Is Mars warm enough yet?

buy toilet paper square carbon offsets by cancelling the NYTimes or whatever propaganda rag you subscribe to.
You'll be able to wipefree (almost)

Tell Bush to stop his secret warming of Mars...we KNOW those rovers are heating things up so his oil croonies can spout "well, Mars is warming" ha! foiled!

I believe comparing NY times to toilet paper is unfair. Toilet paper comes unused and shit free and it does not leave ink streaks on your ass.

Hey Now,

Sorry, I could not mediate this a little better, I was umpiring my sons little league game.
It seems this issue can be looked at from multiple perspectives.(Good Posts Everyone)
It will be interesting to see if there is an increase in volcanic activity to offset temp increases. At this point I do not believe we know to what extent the Earth has built in self regulating mechanisms. But we are probably going to find out.

built in self regulating mechanisms? do you mean like high temperature and low oil shutdowns on an engine?

don't bank the survival of your children on it because the planet's mechanisms could just as likely end up accelerating our demise

Hey Midnight
Yes , there in lies the rub. I had the chance to buy oceanfront property in Florida and declined because I am not
sure which way these climate changes are heading.
